Thursday as such a leisurely morning. We woke up late, eat breakfast at one of the restaurants at the hotel, watched some bands and then waited for the venders to open and after they did, we partook in some seriously crowded shopping.

After Frankie's it was time to head back to the Orleans to see Big Sandy and his ORIGINAL Fly rite boys. This was a real treat for me. I have seen Big Sandy several times but had always heard for my friends who have been going to shows longer then myself, about the original trio. They were so good!
Well, it has been over a month since Viva and I have been so bad at blogging that I am just going to end it there. I will finish the other recaps soon too.
I hope to be better about my Viva recaps this year then last. I don't know what was wrong with me, but I couldn't seam to bring myself to do them. So I think without putting a ton of effort into them and just getting them done will make the task a little less daunting.

Wednesday:

We arrived in Vegas at about 3:30pm, picked up at the airport by my girlfriends mother and she took us to this Mexican restaurant, Viva Mercado's. It was amazing. We met up with the rest of our gang that flew in on separate flights. We drank margaritas, had delicious food, chimichangas, and the bartender at the very end of our meal sent over Almond Tequila. It was very tasty, like nothing I have ever tasted before, but will try and find in Minnesota. Yum!

After our tummies were full it was off to check into the hotel and get ready for the Wild Record Pre-show. Last year, this was one of my favorite events. We wouldn't miss it! The line up was incredible. Noah and I budgeted quite a bit of cash to pick up CD's this time. The week before we left for Vegas we scowered the Wild Records Website to see which bands CD's we wanted. I'm glad we did, they had almost every artist on the label.

“Betty Hutton - Somebody Loves Me”

A couple of days ago my girlfriend Ashley sent me this Betty Hutton Video to show me this amazing fringe dress. Of course with that came instructions with what color she would like her's to be. I don't know about you ladies but I love fringe! I just found a source for 9in fringe. SWOOON!

I was looking through some of my etsy favorites and realized I have several amazing fringe dresses there too! The dress from Atlas Falcon Vintage I almost bought, but is a little to small in the hips, so now that I have a fringe source I can replicate this dress. I have also seen in person this same dress in Cream. Which is, I think, more amazing then the black.

Since fringe seams to be popping up in my life more and more, I think I should really start a new project.

What is your favorite fringe dress?
Monique Rondeauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05274091645698932618noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1075483167455933639.post-59298947866845418972012-02-06T20:43:00.000-08:002012-02-06T20:43:07.381-08:00Florance + The Machine
My new obsession is Florance + The Machine. I love her voice, I find it just magical. I also love her very androgynous look. There is something so beautiful about her alabaster skin and red hair. Stunning.

These photos are from her video "Shake it out". The styling for this video is incredible. You have to check out this breathtaking floor length gold beaded dress.

I have had yet another death in my family, (bringing to total to 8 in 12 months) and this song has been really relating to my heart in all the best ways. I really don't want to be negative, just wanted to share what's going on. The last year has really made me realize how truly lucky we are to have the people in our lives, and need to live life to the fullest. Which is why I am making some large changes in my life this year. I find music can sometimes identify and help coop with certain situations. This song does that for me.

Second stage, Closets.

Before:

As you can see, I have exceeded the amount of space those boxes can accomodate. Leaving my closet always looking like a mess. So, I recently upgraded my scarf and stocking boxes. I have found so many new scarfs in the last few months that my box has overflowith. I decided while I was doing that to proporly fold them and colorize. Making finding the correct color a lot easier.

After:

I also moved my hat collection a little higher in my closet to prevent me from damaging them now that the boxes are bigger. I also invested in a few more hooks so now I can hang more. I rediscovered several hats I had forgot about. I love that about reorganizing!Monique Rondeauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05274091645698932618noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1075483167455933639.post-88388119423005591802012-01-29T22:21:00.000-08:002012-01-29T22:21:07.551-08:00Tying up loose endsHello Again!

2012 has some big changes on the horizon, so with that, for me, comes organization and de-cluttering home, closet and my mind.

I started and finished some projects that I have been putting off for quite a while. Earlier this winter I painted my bathroom, which had been in dire need of paint since we had a little fire over a year ago. It was a lavender color before, but now, a pinky peach! It's called "Friendship", and I love it. It came out just the way I wanted it too. I think it matches my original buttercup with gold fleck original 50's tile nicely. I found this great 60's peach wicker shelf.

These adorable chalkware poodles dated 1957 are also a new addition to the bathroom.

I also found earlier this summer these two spaghetti poodle figurines at a thrift store, one is a planter. That sad little plant is hanging on for dear life. The other was just to cute and tiny to pass up.

I never had any intention of having it a poodle themed bathroom, but I guess it just worked out that way.
There are still some improvements that I would like to make, but I like to do things in steps when I have extra money. That way I buy things I really like, rather then things that will work in a pinch.Monique Rondeauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05274091645698932618noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1075483167455933639.post-83917542381923322092011-08-29T13:43:00.000-07:002011-08-29T13:43:31.937-07:00MissoniI don't know about you but I am a designer junkie. When I used to work as a full time make-up artist I was especially immersed in fashion, fashion shows and designers. Now, several years later I still enjoy a day off at a cafe with Italian & Australian Vogue, W magazine and usually some other international mag that grabs my eye. I like to order up a latte and fantasize about owning fantastic designer wears, or gather inspiration for clothing I'd like to design. Because I am not currently designing any new lines, I am free to peruse as many magazines as I like. When I'm designing up a storm I tend to shy away from magazines as to not rip off someone else's work. But for now.....Bring on the magazines and the youtube videos of this season's big runway shows!!

I have a friend who works for Target corporate. Target's corporate offices are based her in Minneapolis. She is one of many who work on the Target international limited lines. This fall they are featuring MISSONI! I love the colors and the awesome "rick-rack" like patterns. Here is a video of the upcoming collection!

It launches September 13th! I don't know about you but I love the house wears and the coats. I am such a coat junkie (because it is always arctic here!) I am going to be sporting some new cute coats this fall.

Au Revoir,
I have taken the summer off from blogging, though who am I kidding I am not that frequent of a blogger in the winter either. baby steps, baby steps.

Anywhooo, I recently was asked to be part of a very fun project for a newer friend of mine. Sarah Holm is a fellow designer, and she asked me to be one of the leads in one of the 5 short films she is collaborating on. She is making 5 outfits, one for each of the lead rolls of each film. During Minnesota Fashion week (same time as New York Fashion week) she will have these films playing in the back round while the model walk the catwalk in the same outfit. Pretty incredible idea if you ask me! To make the whole project even more amazing Sarah teamed up with Tyler Jensen an up and coming short film director. He is working on a project called 30 films in 30 days. He writes, films and edits these short films in 24 hours, for a whole month! Sarah and Tyler will be collaborating on all 5 films.
This is the film that I was in:

Dressed To Kill: Terminal Coolness, Or I Used To Eat Your Brains Before Everyone Else Did! from Tyler Jensen on Vimeo.

Tyler also just got word yesterday, that this film will be shown at Zombiefest in the UK! I believe this is happening next week. How cool!

Well, that's all for now. Once the summer slows down a bit I will start blogging again.

Until then,
Au RevoirMonique Rondeauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05274091645698932618noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1075483167455933639.post-19934284186838022522011-05-30T09:10:00.000-07:002011-05-30T09:10:13.278-07:00Happy Memorial day!Happy Memorial day everyone! I am just about to go pay my respects to my grandparents at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. I was looking through these photos of my brother and I. He is away in the middle East. I miss him terribly, and wish that I could see him or even talk with him. Sadly, that is not a reality. Somehow seeing these photos make it easier for him to be away.
I was pulling my hair out of rollers when Noah waked into the bathroom with this:
This is just another example of how nice it was going from farewell snowmen to 85!
My only excuse is that I went on a second "vacation" two days after getting back from Viva. I have finally gotten photos uploaded and am ready to spill the beans on my vacation(s)!

Wednesday morning I was up very early to finish last minute packing and wash and wet set my hair before we left. I open our bedroom curtains to check the weather, and 2 inches of snow had accumulated on my lawn, over night. My boyfriend says in a sleepy haze "what's the damage?" I continue looking out the window and mutter "At least the high is going to be 85 degrees this afternoon". Thats all I could say. This has been a cruel spring for Minnesota. After I got over my depression of the snow on the ground with a cup of coffee it was a whirl win of hair flowers, scarfs, last min pair of shoes, more accessories (just in case), another palette of eye shadow and as the door bell rang and my Dad was at the door to take us to the airport I stuffed in another "emergency" pair of shoes into my already stuffed suitcase. That brought the running total to 9 pairs of shoes. Excessive, I know!

The flight was a breeze. Stepping out into the fresh air outside the airport, it was warm and my mood instantly became 100% better. I had been wanting/needing this vacation for a long time! We waited in line for a cab, stuffed all out luggage in and suffered through the scariest cab ride I have ever taken. And that is saying something! I was so happy to arrive at the hotel. Our friend Ashley, a Vegas native, called us right as we were pulling up to the hotel, she was going to take us from the airport to Rancho Ronny's meet and greet, but she had just missed us. We decided to get settled in, change and she would pick us up and take us the the Wild Record pre-party instead of Frankie's tiki room. I was really looking forward to seeing Frankie's because Ashley talks about it a bunch but am really happy to take her advice and going to the Wild party instead. Wednesday night turned out to be one of my favorite nights of the whole trip.
This was one of my favorite bands from the night.

One of the best parts about this event was that all the bands played on the same kit, which meant that change over time was almost non-existent. I think we literally heard 20-25 bands that night, all fantastic. It was the best start to the weekend. We stayed and danced till 6am.

Official viva posts coming up!
Bien sorte de ...

Spring has sprung! Well, sort of.

It's freezing here, and they are talking about more snow this weekend! For the love! I just want to be warm! Thankfully I leave for Viva las Vegas in 4 days. With this deadline fastly approaching, but the warm weather not, I have decided to turn over my closets anyhow! I don't know about you be but I don't have enough closet space to keep all my winter garb and summer lovelies in one place. So, around this time in the spring I do a massive clothing swap. Although this is a tedious process, it keeps down the clutter, and prevents me from keeping things I never wear. If I haven't wore it once in a season then it either gets seriously evaluated, donated, given to girlfriends or thrown in a box to sell around that season the next year.

I haven't talked any about viva, because there is so much chatter about it on so many other blogs. I can't hold it in any longer though! I am sooooo EXCITED! I have never been, but have wanted to go for the last 3 or 4 years but it was never the right timing or I had to pay in for taxes due to being a subcontractor. This year I decided hell or high water my fella and I are going! It also happens to be his birthday weekend so it was added fuel to the fire to make it work. I have bought several new items including a couple vintage swimsuits, play suits and cocktail dresses. I can't wait to wear, but I also have some things still in spring storage that I need to dig out in order to pack them for my trip. I stopped for a break and some fresh air. My fell snapped a couple of pictures of me in my cleaning garb. I just pick up these dungarees last week. I don't own many pairs of Jeans but I am really enjoying these.
Not because of a failing economy or lack of interest, but for a "business deal". Porky's, an iconic Drive-in closed it's doors after being open since 1953. This was one of the last real gems for retro lovers in Minnesota.

When my boyfriend and I started dating(many moons ago), one of my favorite dates we would go on would be cruising down University in our 62' Galaxie 500, stopping at Porky's for a burger, malt and the best onion rings around. My mouth waters just thinking about them. To end the evening we used to drive out to one of the two remaining drive-in movies and end the night under the stars. We used to have said dates a few times a summer, more if my fella was trying to get on my good side. With sadness those are now just fond memories.

We decided on the last night it was open to go down and do it up right, just like we would have this summer if it was still open.

Here is my handsome fella keeping it cool as we sat in bumper to bumper traffic for over a half hour waiting to get close.

I don't have many pictures of us cruising around in "Alie" the Galaxie. (She is called Alie because when we dug her out to the farm field in Northern Minnesota she only had those remaining letters on the back trunk lid from the full word GALAXIE. She now has all of her letters but the name has still stuck.)

When we got there most of university had already been dug up for a new lightrail system to be put in. This construction made it impossible to get into the parking lot. I was saddened the most by this fact. Normally (at least a few years ago), the parking lot would be full of vintage cars and their owners hanging out and enjoying some food and chatting it up with other car owners. It's own night car show, if you will. To see it empty but this old Porky's truck was super sad. I had never seen that truck before, or that Chicken!!
Anyways, here are some photos of the building. The line for food was two blocks long for over 6 1/2 hours. So, I never got any of those delicious onion rings. There are rumours of opening a Porky's at the Minnesota State Fair. Which is another interesting event that happens in MN, people anticipate all year. I'll post about that event after it happens.

Towards the end of the night it became total mayhem. The cops were staying away from the block allowing for burnouts and drag racing down the block in front of Porky's. It felt just like the older days, when I first started spending my summers at Porky's. The whole end of the evening felt so serial and mildly post-apocalyptic. There was all the smoke from the burn outs and the cement tore all up.

As we drove away and I looked back to take a picture I had perfectly timed it for the sign to give me a wink. That is the way I will always remember Porky's, hot summer nights and a friendly neon sign that winked at you as you said Goodbye!Monique Rondeauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05274091645698932618noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1075483167455933639.post-53842782551268276032011-04-06T09:23:00.000-07:002011-04-06T09:23:50.201-07:00Minnesota NaughtyLast week I attended a forum at the Minnesota History Center. It was called "History of Hip: Minnesota Naughty!" The forum explored Minnesota's racy side through two of their finest risque exports, pin-up artist Gil Elvgren- the Norman Rockwell of Cheesecake- and Munsingwear- Minnesota's claim to underwear fame.

Susan Marks was there as the first speaker of the evening. She has written a book called "In the mood for Munsingwear." She talked all about Munsingwear's being one of the first company's to use live models for there advertising.Something that was just not done in the late 1800's. Munsingwear was also known for their controversial ads, with numerous ads flirting with homosexuality. Munsingwear wasn't only known for their ads but for their Union suits. George Munsing, the father of itchless underwear, came up with a revolutionary and ingenious way to plate silk onto wool. Creating warm but non irritating unders.
I am so glad that I purchased this book after the lecture, and as an added bonus Susan signed it for me. If you are interested in checking it out you can find it at your local book Barnes and Noble or Here. They probably have it at your local library as well. Give it a look.

On to the second part of the forum! Elvgren!

Gil Elvgren is one of my favorite pin-up artists. Although not as popular as Vargas or some would say Petty, I still like his girl next store images. She is always active getting herself in all kinds of trouble, but still cute as a button throughout the whole ordeal. These are the two originals they had on display:

Sara Murphy was the speaker and owner of these originals discussing Elvgren. Elvgren was raised in Minnesota and after high school attended Minneapolis Institute of Art (Which is about 5 blocks from my house). he later moved to Chicago where his studio was. He was known for often using neighbor ladies and friends as his models. As Sara explained, he was the type of man biographers hated. He was a quite man who loved his wife and was a wonderful father. (BORING!! Just kidding. I think it is refreshing!)
All in all, My best gals and I had a wonderful time. The photographer from the History Center, Bill Jolitz took these photos of the group of us gals and a few of me. He and I are going to do a photo shoot next month. I will be sure to blog about it after it happens.
I found it at the thrift store for $7.99. A steal! I have it hung in our bedroom. Whenever I wake up and see it, it makes me feel whimsical. In my opinion one of the best feelings to have in the morning!
I am sorry for my long absence. I bring to you a sewing post, as promised.

I found this fantastic vintage inspired fabric. It reminds me of parasols or umbrellas. I have been longing for the days of spring. With it just snowing another 5 inches of snow last night, I guess I am going to have to wait a bit longer. ugh. This new skirt lifts my spirits though. Can't wait to wear it outdoors!

I decided to mix three different patterns instead of just winging it like I normally do. I figured I'd be a little rusty, and I might as well use a guide. I am happy to report all went pretty smoothly. Well, I guess you can see for yourself.

The only little snafu I had, was I didn't buy enough fabric. I forget that it takes 3-3.5 yards to make circle skirts. Luckily, when I went back to the store they still had the same bolt out, so I just had them cut me the same amount. Now if I want to make a bolero, I now have enough for that too. You can't really tell from the photos, but this skirt has a pocket. Almost every dress or skirt I sew has pockets. For me I am a women that finds them a necessity. I hope you agree.

I made another circle skirt today, just needs to be hemmed. I also cut out two different tops out of that same fabric. I can't wait till I have some time to finish them. I will share those pieces too, when they are finished!
Hope you all have a great rest of your week. This is how I will be spending the rest of my evening.
Au Revoir!
She passed mid-day on March 2nd. This fall/winter season has been a rough one for my family. We laid my uncle to rest the week before Thanksgiving, now my grandmother and my other grandmother just entered hospice care. From my experience hospice care isn't a long road. Unfortunately, this is not going to be an uplifting post, but this blog is about my life and this is a big thing(s) that is happening currently in my life.

My mother's mother who passed last week suffered from chronic depression. Her doctors never really figured out the best mix of meds, which is heart wrenching to think about. The only memories from my childhood are of her in almost a catatonic state, blinded by her sorrow. She had such a hard life, which makes honoring her memory very difficult. I have had death in my life from such a young age with three schoolmates, two very close dying. One in elementary and the other in high school. Those deaths have really molded how I deal with crisis and death to this day. I am a "calls it like I sees it girl", which makes my grandmother's death so difficult. I want to be authentic but at the same time I don't have very happy memories to share. It tears me up inside to say that aloud, however, it is the cold hard truth. I guess my favorite memories are of meeting with my grandmother's brothers and talking about family. When my mother and I clean out my grandma's apartment 6 months ago, we found all of grandma's photo albums. That started, for me, the quest to know more about my genealogy. I have learned so many wonderful things I never knew. Then when I would visit grandma I could ask her more about them. Who so-in-so was and what their business was. Sometimes she would play along and sometimes she would get cranky and say "I thought I told you that already, aren't you writing this down? I'm old, I don't like to repeat myself" I always smile and chuckle to myself. She was an old kook!

Here are some old photos I found from her and my grandfather's wedding day. They are so wonderfully 50's I can barely contain myself. Please Excuse the numbers on the photos, these are their original proof. I haven't had time to edit them on photo shop yet.

I was given a dress of her's a couple of years ago. I decided to wear that dress to her funeral. It is made of 100% felt. It has pockets too! Everybody at the funeral just loved it. They all thought it was wonderful that I would honor her by wearing a terrific outfit. She was know to be a fashion plate back in there prime. This dress was also the insperation for one of my dresses for my fashion back in September. My grandmother liked my felt dress better and was flattered that I would make something inspired by something of hers, and to top it off she was able to see it. Her's is the green one and the one I made the black one.
I promise my next few blogs will be a little more upbeat. February was a rough month, but it is over and it is time for spring and a re-birth of all things living! This year it snuck up on me, I usually have the dates on my calender and budget to spend a pretty penny. This year I was driving to work when I happened to see the sign in the window, thank goodness. Luckily, I had a short work day and headed directly there after I closed up shop. I didn't want a repeat of the previous year, where a girl with my same measurements beat me to a whole rack of dresses. Literally, she took 30 some dresses in the fitting rooms and bought everyone. I ended up taking myself out for whiskey old fashions instead with my unspent cash. I was bound and determined to not let that happen again. If you are ever in the Minneapolis area I highly recommend checking Tatters out. It is ridiculously reasonable.
I ended up getting two great staple wool skirts, one it black/charcoal and a mahogany one. We still have 2-3 more weeks of winter, so I will at least get to wear them a couple times.

Later that night, I met up with a few of my pals to see Al's Rockabilly Quartet play a few sets at a local bowling alley. My permanent dance partner was feeling a little under the weather, so I left him on the couch watching movies and drinking hot toddys. Sometimes, I love just a night out with the pals. One of my favorite fill in dance partners was there, minus his wife, so lucky for me I got quite a bit of dancing in. Of course, typical me, I brought my camera and it never left my hand bag. However, I did get a quick photo before bed of my new skirt and favorite broach.
The first, the sewing room is clean!!! Secondly, I started sewing again. YAY! Not with the same gusto as before, but at least it is a start. Baby steps, I'll get there again hopefully, but for now I am just glad to "be back in the saddle again". Look for sewing posts in the future.
I don't think I can put it into words the state of this, so here you go. Hevan help me, I'm airing out my dirty laundry!

Needless to say, things haven't been going how I have planned. I took part in a two designer fashion show in September 2010, and since then I physically cannot bring myself to sit down and sew. ANYTHING! For that show I made 18 pieces in 4 months, including a sharkskin suit, high trousers, 2 men's dress shirts, wool jumper with floral blouse, 2 day dresses, cigarette pants with brocade wrap top, a cocktail dress, felt dress with hand beaded flowers, 2 party dresses and a full wedding dress with removable train. (If I could figure out how to link you to them I would. Maybe another post). Burnt out is an understatement! I have been getting a steady stream of clients wanting work done and I still owe some alterations (as payment for some of the models) but I can't bring myself to do them.

Next week, on my "weekend" my goal is to (torch the place, just kidding) clean and organize this space. Although, we are still 6-8 weeks from spring here in Minnesota, I have caught the spring cleaning bug early. Wish me luck that I can stick to the plan.

On a lighter note.

I bought these really cute vintage earmuffs from this amazing vintage store called The Corner Store. My intention was to use them on one of my models for the show, however, it turned out to be 90 degrees the day of the show and I didn't feel like I could torture that poor girl. I had just tucked them away with all the other accessories after the show. I was assessing how extensive this mess really was and....Walla!! There they were, just as cute as the day I bought them. I had totally forgotten about them. Truly a day brightener! It also helped the sun was out.
My thought is for it to help me with my goal to eat more organically and locally. I have to say, my new favorite thing is to plan meals out, go to the co-op and come home and cook up a storm. Give or take a glass of wine in there too!
Let me say that I am both full, happy and feel amazing! Not only does if feed the belly but it also feeds my soul. Cooking whole foods has become my new source of entertainment.Monique Rondeauhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05274091645698932618noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1075483167455933639.post-4709446781275857582010-12-29T20:30:00.001-08:002010-12-29T21:13:57.206-08:00On word and up word. This time of years always invokes reflection for me. The stress of Christmas is over and yet there is the looming new year ahead. The new year always makes me feel two ways. One, that I haven't done enough in the current year. Secondly, I feel the weight of expectation from the new year. As I get older, the years seem to pass by faster and faster. The laundry list of places to go and things to see seems to become more of a unrealistic task instead of a wish list. I know that this can't be changed over night but in the spirit of the New year I have been thinking heavily about what is really important to me and what I really want out of this next year.

It is no mystery that I am getting older, with that come (in my judgement) more expectations. I have set these certain expectations years ago, and now it it time to see how they measure up. For those goals not made, it is time to either reassess or decide they aren't as big of a deal and move on.

These are my goals/aspirations for the next year:
1). Have health insurance. (a must)
2). Do the Triathlon I have been wanting to do for the last 4 years now.
3). Go to Viva Las Vegas in April.
4). Eat more Organically and locally.
5). Be a really good cook/ vegetarian.
6). Decide what I am going to do with my company, how I'm going to run it and take care of myself during the whole process.
7). Love Noah without limitations. It is time to let go and love whole heartedly.
8). Have an "intervention" with my parents about their health and finances. (I can't believe I've waited this long)
9). Decide about my job. Either find a job that fulfills me more or dive into my work and really decide to give it my all. My indifference is killing me!
and
10). Start Dreaming again. I feel like I have lost some lust for life. My everyday has forced my dreams to the back seat or even the trunk. It is time to air out the mothballs on my dreams.

The reason I decided to start this blog is because I have big plans to explore my culinary talents, expand my sewing/designing abilities and have a place to express my ideas and frustrations. I hope never to offend or disgust but am a realist and know that might happen. If it does, i'm sorry in advance. That was /is never my intention.
